In conjunction with The Art Books of Henri Matisse exhibition, on May 11 the Bechtler presents a gallery talk by ceramic artist Alex Matisse, the great-grandson of Henri Matisse. Matisse will discuss his family history and how the artists in his family influenced his work and career. His grandfather, the gallery owner Pierre Matisse, heavily influenced the modern art movement in America. About his famous relative Henri, in 2012 Matisse told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "The connection I feel there is his work can be understood. Anybody can look at most of his paintings and ... see beauty in them."
